What is paragraph?

 A paragraph is a piece of writing that focuses one particular topic or event. There would be at least 10-12 lines which would logically be connected one by one. A good paragraph has unity, coherence and clarity to make the idea clear and easy for the readers to understand.  

How to Write a Paragraph:

Topic Sentence: When we write a paragraph we must focus on that particular point or topic that we are writing about. We shouldn’t provide there any kind of other information except the main idea or theme. 

Supporting Details: Now in this point we must provide valuable information, facts, necessary things related to the main topic. Also we should remember one thing that the words or sentences must be simple and easy so that it looks acceptable for everyone. 

Concluding Sentence: Last but not the least, in the conclusion we must summarize the whole content so that reader can get the gist of it and can make it a sense. 



Paragraph


Types of Paragraphs

Most of the time we don’t want to identify the types of paragraphs, but as I said you will have everything about paragraph in this articles. When we write a paragraph it defines a particular type of paragraph. Most of the time we can’t understand that type but if we know those types our paragraph writing would be more accurate, concise and most importantly we can convey the whole objective of the paragraph. 

Now let’s see those types of paragraph. Here in this articles you will surely get those types with an example of a paragraph each. 


1. Descriptive Paragraph: 

A descriptive paragraph is that type of paragraph which paints or illustrates a vivid picture about a person, place, object, event etc. With our five sensory organs we can describe it. The main objective of this type of descriptive paragraph is to help the readers to imagine the scene clearly as if they were experiencing themselves.

A. My English Teacher

English is a nice language and our English teacher makes it more beautiful and easy. Mr. Banerjee, my English teacher, is one of the most inspiring persons I have ever met. He is man of scholar. His fluency in English makes us mesmerized. His voice is very soft and firm. He can speak anything in a very confident manner. I still remember I wasn’t good at English earlier but when I met with him I thought I can improve myself in English. He has very much efficiency in literature and also guides us very well. Sometimes he scolds us but not harshly, we can understand his scolds will make us discipline. He always gives us confidence to speak, write and communicate with others in English. He is a man of genius. I am very much lucky to have someone as my teacher with whom I can share my doubts and problems easily.  

B. My Mother

The person whom I love and respect a lot is my mother. She is the person who struggled a lot to give birth and bring up me. She is everything for me. For her I could get chance to see this beautiful nature. She works hard all day for our well-being. She takes care of everyone. She spent countless sleepless nights when I became ill. When the whole world is against me she stands by me. She never complains for doing so many house hold works rather she becomes happy doing these works. From dawn to night she takes care of everything like a tree protects us from sunshine. She is the best person in my life and I have very much lucky to be her child. I always pray for her happiness and well ness. 

C. A Beautiful Flower Garden

Flower is one of the most beautiful things that gives us aesthetic pleasure. Just 10 minutes from my house there is a beautiful flower garden with colorful flowers. There are red roses, yellow roses, marigold, white lilies, sunflower, jasmine etc. The sweet fragrance of jasmine fills the air especially in the evening. All the flowers bloom cheerfully in a row that looks amazing. Birds come here and chirp. Butterflies travel from one flower to another. Bees and insects come to collect honey from flowers. The whole garden seems to be the garden of paradise where peace and beauty simultaneously live. Besides, the sweet soft green grass gives our feet freshness and energy. This is a place where I can spend a lot of time with myself in the serene beauty of flowers. 

D. A Winter Morning

Winter is a very pleasant and comfortable season for Asian countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka as well as Indian sub-continent. A winter morning starts with a tranquil atmosphere as if the world is wrapped in a soft and warm blanket. The day begins slowly as the smoky fog is spread in the air and makes everything opaque. Gradually the Sun peeps through the fog and rays of the sun starts removing the smoky fog. Few bare hands go for the tea shop or coffee shop for having the comfort of hot tea or coffee. The whole night dew is sparkled on the tip of the grass as the sunlight looks on them. Overall the whole atmosphere is quite beautiful with a freshness and coldness.  

E. A Rainy Day 

Rain is blessings for the earth and a day full of rain is special peace to the world. A rainy day brings a package of happiness together. The sky becomes cloudy and grey. The pitter patter sound of rain creates a melodious note when the raindrops fall on the rooftops. The roads, trees, houses are cleaned. The ponds, rivers get sufficient water. Little children start playing football as they are free from school that day. Foody people like to have delicious dishes with the special preference of hot tea and snacks. However, a rainy day is enjoyable yet there are few negative sides on this like people get stuck into the house instead of doing their work, excessive water disturbs the life of slum areas etc. 


2. Narrative Paragraph: 

A narrative paragraph is a kind of paragraph which describes about a story or incident. When we reminiscence something we get reminded some beautiful memories or incidents that took place in our life.

A. My First Day at School

I think nobody can forget the memory of first day at high school. It was Monday and I went with my father. On the way I was very much confident but as soon as I entered into the school gate my heart started beating like a drum. We were asked to wait at head master’s room. Then within 10 minutes head teacher, Mr. Sharma came with a white shirt and black pant. My nervousness got its height when he started asking me few questions. Luckily I answered all of those and thus I was admitted there. Our school clerk Ghosh uncle took me to my class and I was sit in the second bench. Everyone in the class was looking at me and I was feeling awkward. But one important happened that day, I got my first friend at high school. I got a solid reason to come to school regularly. Thus I completed my first day at high school with both anxiety and happiness. 

B. The Morning I Will Never Forget

During my summer vacation my father planned to our village house to get rid of the busy city life of Kolkata. So, we went there. But the magical things happened on the very next morning when I and my brother woke up at 5.30 a.m. I never heard such a sweet melodious notes of birds. Also, we got the gentle cool breeze through the window. For the first time I saw that kind of sunrise behind the paddy field. Before the sunrise the whole sky becomes pink and it created an absolute beauty. In the field I walked on the grass and felt a chilling moment. The natural beauty was so close to me and I was enjoying with my core of the heart. That morning I will always remember as that day I realized we all are the part of this nature not separated from the nature. That serene morning reminded me to slow down and enjoy the every little things of nature. 

C. My Surprised Birthday Celebration  

Birthday is a special day for everyone and I am not different from them. Like every year my parents arranged a birthday party at my house on my birthday 9th July. I enjoyed a lot that day and got many beautiful gifts from everyone. But the best gift I got was my surprised birthday celebration at one of my friend’s house. She normally called me and I went there. When I entered into her room balloons, snow spray, blasters starts flying and instantly I became awestruck. They gave me the one of the best gifts with their love and hearty wishes. I never thought like that. Then cutting a beautiful ice cake we completed the whole program. At last, aunty served us hot luchis and potato curry with coriander. That was very delicious. Thus, I got my surprised gift. 

D. The Day I Got My Totu

Totu is not only a parrot rather it’s my one and only friend now. I spend most of the time with him. I still remember the day I got him. It was a stormy night and was lightening outside. At that very moment something stuck in our balcony. Later I found an injured parrot. Immediately I rescued him and became frightened whether he would be fine or not. However with my efforts I gradually cure his legs. Since then he became my Totu, actually I gave this name. He can talk with me and go where I go. He only demands grams and pees as his food. 

E. My First Flight on Plane

I never forget about the experience of my first flight on the plane. I was super excited for that travel as it was my first time. We travelled to Chennai for my father’s health checkup. Our journey started from Kolkata Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. When the flight takes off my stomach starts slipping then after taking off it became normal. From the plane the whole Kolkata city was looking like a bunch of lights. The houses look like toy houses. I saw some beautiful patches of clouds through the window as I could touch it. The flight took only one hour but that one hour created a vivid memory in my life and that one hour I enjoyed the best experience ever I had so far. It was a magical hour for my life. 



3. Informative Paragraphs:

A informative paragraph is a kind of paragraph that informs us about any facts, valuable things, moral lessons. This type of paragraphs help a reader to learn something from the paragraph in an easy and simple way.

A. The Internet

‘Internet’ is a short version of international network whose invention changed the whole scenario and aspects of life as well as our learning, living and communicating. It connects millions of people around the world. Through the internet we can send emails, attend online classes, purchase things also we can communicate face to face using video call. Internet accesses the encyclopaedia in front of us which helps us to get numerous information about study and other things. Internet opens a new opportunity for learning, earning, collecting information, health advices, and also expressing talents through social media. Internet brings our world in our hand. We can easily pay bills, order things for shopping, book tickets etc. Moreover of late we can stay in touch with our kith and kin through social media. However as we all know that every side has both positive and negative side. So, we must be cautious using internet. In modern times people are getting benefits of internet as well as negative impacts of it like cyberbullying, data theft, fake news etc. So, we must be very careful using internet related works. 

B. The Importance of Reading

Reading is one of the most effective habits to acquire knowledge. Reading books give us pleasure and confidence. It helps us learning new idea, gathering numerous vocabularies and a making us a good communicator. Reading is the first step of learning anything. Reading also improves our memory and focus at something. Students who read regularly do better score in school. Scientific studies show us that reading reduces stress and anxiety. Apart from learning reading allow us to explore new world, meet enchanting character etc. most importantly when we read an article or story or information we get in touch with the culture, beliefs, customs of the society at that time and the mind-set of the writer is also revealed. A writer spend his valuable time to write the book and we get those lessons in just reading the book. In today’s world people scrolling down social media instead of reading books. Reading gives us clarity and deep thinking on something. It slows down our mind and makes our mind relax. It also helps us to patient and responsible. Even a little habit of reading at least 20-30 minutes in a day can make a big difference in future. The smartest people of the world, millionaire, educator, great leaders read a huge amount of books in their life. So it’s very much needed habit to change ourselves as well as our society. 

C. Importance of Trees/ Trees are Our Best Friend 

Tree is the best thing in this world who provides us every necessary things without demanding anything. Tree is the first life that comes in this earth before animals. The whole world is survived for only trees. Trees give us food, necessary things, shelter, medicines and most vital oxygen which is one of the basic need of animals. Trees bring rain that helps to grow crops and remove the scarcity of water. The animals’ bio diversity depends on the trees. Trees are the valuable part of this eco system. Without trees no life will be survived on this earth. Our planet is full of natural plants and trees which make our planet beautiful and fresh.  Trees help the soil by holding and prevent soil erosion. Trees make our temperature normal. Cutting numerous trees is one of the main reasons of climate change. So, we need to plant more and more trees to make our nature pollution free. We also should aware people to save trees and plant trees. 

D. Climate Change- A Growing Global Challenge

Climate change is one of most burning issues now a days. It refers to the long term changes in weather, temperature, atmosphere caused by human activities. One of the main reasons of climate change is excessive presence of Co2, CFC, CH4 etc. deadly greenhouse gases that prevent sunlight and make our earth hot which is called global warming. These type of gases emit from vehicles, factories, power plant. The effects of climate change is visible everywhere. Summer is getting hotter, polar ice is melting, sea water level is increasing, and natural calamities like earthquake, flood, drought, famines, wildfires, cyclones are being often occurred. Poor animals are losing homes and they are not getting food. Farmers are struggling with irregular rainfall, our health is getting affected. Many types of skin diseases, lungs diseases are attacking. To overcome this problem we must be aware using vehicles, using electricity, using factories. We must plant millions and millions of trees to make earth green again. If we callously avoid this threat it will ruin animal world and the situation would be very dangerous to survive. 

E. Water- The lifeline of Earth 

Water is the most essential natural resource on this planet. Without water no can even imagine to survive in this world. All living objects- animals, humans, birds, and trees need water to survive. We use water everyday like bathing, drinking, cooking, cleaning, washing and farming. Water covers about 71% in this world but a little quantity of water is safe for drinking. Most of the water is salty sea water. Water is our life. It keeps our body healthy. Many aquatic animals who is on water. The main sources of getting water is rain water, pond, river and underground water which is potable for drinking. However, water is being polluted at an alarming rate. Rivers and oceans are getting dirty with chemicals and plastics. In different parts of the world people are facing extreme scarcity of potable water. So, we need to be cautious using potable water and also we must spread aware for not polluting water by any means. If we don’t see this grave issue seriously there is a possibility of facing water scarcity in near future. 


4. Comparative Paragraph:

A comparative paragraph always finds similarities or differences between two things or objects. The main objective of this type of paragraph is to clear and make sense of the idea in front of the readers so that they can understand how the things are alike or different.

A. Online class vs. Traditional class

Of late our life aspects have been changed a lot after the Covid pandemic and it effected our learning process also. Before covid pandemic we were very much accustomed to the traditional offline classes for learning. But now online classes opened a new opportunity for us to gather knowledge from any part of this world. We can join any learning session at any place, we don’t need to go to the classroom for getting that. Offline or traditional classes don’t provide that kind of opportunity. Now a day’s most of the corporate employees attend various valuable session from their home. But there are few things that are the negative sides of online classes. Offline classes are consisted of face to face interaction, immediate feedback, and structured schedule and on the other hand online classes don’t have all these. Offline classes provide personal connection, discipline but online classes have lack of that. Moreover, little children are getting addicted to mobile and that is very dangerous sign for our society. Therefore, we can easily say online classes are needed for higher studies or gathering information from the experts but offline classes are very much needed for our society to be a proper man. 


B. City life vs. Village life

City life and village life both are very much different in many aspects. Both city life and village life have their own importance. City life is full of opportunities, advanced technology, entertainment etc. on the other hand village life are very much peaceful, close to nature, more relaxed life. City life provides better education, career and chances on the other way village life provide less education opportunities than city life as most of the educational institution are built in city. Also one important part of village life is its serene beauty, peaceful nature, pollution and noise free life, but the city life has always pollution, noise and people are very much in a hurry always make hue and cry. Thus we can say both city life and village life have their own charm and challenges. It’s our habit to live either in city or village. 


C. Public School vs. Private School

Since British Raj we have been seeing that there are specially two types of schools, public school funded by government and private school funded by any trust board, owner or corporate businessman. Both the schools are structured for providing education. Public schools are much affordable for all kinds of people but on the other hand private schools are for only those who belong to a wealthy family. Private schools offer various extracurricular activities like swimming, drawing, horse riding etc. in exchange of money but public schools don’t offer those kinds of co-curricular activities. Most of the private schools are autonomous bodies and so they make their own rules of teaching, method of teaching. Private schools provide more modern style of teaching in comparison with public schools. For their high cost majority people can’t afford private school education and they go for public school as for their affordable cheap cost of admission. 


D. Indoor Games vs. Outdoor Games

Game is a very exciting and entertaining thing in our life. Since our childhood we play various types of games. There are two types of major games – indoor and outdoor games. Both the games are essential in their own perspective. Outdoor games like football, cricket, basketball, volley ball etc. make our body and mind fit and fine. One can refresh his mind by playing outdoor games. On the other hand indoor games like chess, puzzle, mobile games, Ludo, table tennis etc. make you happy as well as give entertainment. Outdoor games are essential for all of us to get in touch with nature and outside world, but during rainfall or natural calamity indoor games are the best alternative. Outdoor games need a lot of physical fitness but indoor games need not that kind of physical fitness. Though playing video game is not good for health and mind. Of late most of the children are getting addicted to video game which actually makes a heavy loss of their mind and body. 


E. Physical Books vs. E-books

Books always play a vital role in gathering knowledge and getting information. Earlier there was only physical books but now a days we have been introduced with E-books reading. Both the books are for reading and gaining valuable knowledge yet there are few differentiation. Physical books make you feel happy with the turn of the pages, scent of the new books. A reader can be more focus with the physical books on the other hand E-Books can distract a reader with notification. E-Books can easily be carried to any place where there is short space as it is in the mobile or tablets or laptops, but on the other way physical books demand more space. E-Books are lightweight, portable, can be stored a thousand of books in one device but physical books need a minimum quantity of space to keep. Physical books can be less harmful for our eyes but E-Books can create screen fatigue, eye problems as all the reading is on the screen. However, it’s on the reader’s personal choice to select physical books or E-Books. 


5. Expository Paragraph: 

An expository paragraph always try to explain the topic in a rational, factual and with clarity. This type of paragraph creates a scientific outlook towards the subject or topic. No one can give any personal opinion on this paragraph. The whole paragraph would be on the basis of logic and facts.

A. How Photosynthesis Works



Photosynthesis is a process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria make their food in their leaves. It needs sunlight, carbon-di-oxide, and water from soil to produce glucose and release oxygen as a by-product. Plants’ leaves have chlorophyll and it absorbs sunlight to combine water and carbon-di-oxide to produce glucose. Photosynthesis is a very vital function of plants and much needed for surviving the whole animal world. Firstly, by photosynthesis plants absorb carbon-di-oxide and reduce the amount of carbon-di-oxide in the air. Secondly, photosynthesis helps to produce oxygen which is a necessary thing for sustain the animal world. Thirdly, photosynthesis produces food and helps the animal world to exist in this world. Last but not the least, it creates a balance of the gases in the atmosphere. 


B. Importance of water

Water is a much needed and very essential thing in this world. Water is life for everyone. All the animals’ world survive for this precious thing. Water helps trees to grow and also helps in the process of photosynthesis. Animals and humans are very much dependent on water as it helps to keep balance our body temperature, keep our body hydrated. Water helps to supply nutrients to the whole body. Water is needed in industrial works as well as farming. We use water not only to drink but also for washing, bathing. We can survive two or three days without food but we can’t image a day without using water. So we must be cautious in using this precious gift of nature so that we can use it as it is. 


                                                                 C. Pollution 

Pollution is a kind of thing when our environmental elements can’t work in proper rhythm for the presence of harmful substances. Pollution causes serious problem to the nature and breaks the balance of nature. For this pollution plants and animals and humans suffer a lot with their health. There are air, water, noise, soil, light, plastic, thermal pollution that cause grave damage to us. Few humans are responsible for these pollution. They are very much greedy and they even have no contemplation on that rather they use natural things for earning more wealth. If these kinds of pollution increase more than its normal rate, then animal world would be at the edge of extinct. It’s a serious problem and we must reduce pollution at any cost for a better world and for a better environment. 


D. Cause of Deforestation 

Deforestation is one the biggest problem now a days. Human beings are in a wild mode of deforestation. Instead of planting millions and millions of trees we are cutting down trees mercilessly. The main objective of deforestation is clearing land for farming and construction. As a result the temperature of the earth is increasing day by day, climate change is also an issue. Moreover, flood water or rain water damage the soil and break its particles as we know trees prevent soil erosion. Trees are also cutting down for furniture, wood. The wild animals are losing their home and spend days after days in starvation. Trees are the prime source of oxygen. So there is a much possibility of lacking oxygen in near future. We should immediately stop deforestation and plant trees as much as possible. 



6. Persuasive Paragraph:

A persuasive paragraph is a kind of paragraph where writer tries to convince the readers with his/her opinions or beliefs. Although the appeal should be logical, factual and emotional so that readers can find out the exact meaning of agree with the writer’s opinions or beliefs.

A. The value of school uniforms

The word uniform is made with the sense of unity. School uniform makes the students unite with one another forgetting caste, creed, and religion. Also it helps the students to be disciplined and responsible. It removes the pressure of having expensive clothes and equal all of the students. School uniforms also give those belongings and identity. Uniform creates a positive environment in the school. Every school must mandatory wearing school uniforms. Uniforms are generally formed in one colour or sometimes two colours to impact the idea of quality and oneness. 


B. Physical Exercise is must for everyone

In our modern world we are very much busy in our works to earn money. But we never thought that our health should be the first priority. If our health is lost we can’t regain it in exchange of money. So it’s physical exercise which can give us a healthy body. It not only helps us to be healthy physically but also it helps us to reduce stress, give us mental pleasure. There are various types of physical exercises like swimming, running, cycling, yoga, walking. Even a 30 minutes regular walk creates a big difference in a person’s life. People all ages should exercise regularly and keep their body and mind healthy and fit. 


C. Reading book is better than watching mobile 

Reading books is always a preferable choice to watching mobile. Reading helps to improve pronunciation, vocabularies as well as deep thinking. Books help a reader to understand the scenario and situation of the article. Books assists a reader to understand the psychological ground of the writer. Reading always keeps our brain active. It give us a mental satisfaction and peace. Reading 30 minutes a day makes a man genius and rich in knowledge. So everyone must read daily at least 30 minutes in a day to be the part of genius. 


D. Everyone must take care of environment

Environment is our home where we live with all other animals and plants. We must take care of this environment so that we can live here peacefully and make arrangements for others to let live them happily. We people are very callous towards our environment. We must be cautious in our environment which prepares a comfortable place for us to exist on this earth. Everyone needs not to be an environmentalist but everyone must take care of it as much as possible.
